Washington Redskins look better, but they may not get to the NFL playoffs

The Washington Redskins open their season Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys. Washington has made a lot of changes since last year's disastrous National Football League season, when the team had a record of four wins and 12 losses. Let's take a look at how the Redskins football jersey
have changed.
First, Washington has a new head coach. Mike Shanahan is a proven winner who led the Denver Broncos to Super Bowl championships in 1998 and 1999. He should be a big improvement over former coach Jim Zorn.
The Redskins also have a new quarterback, Donovan McNabb. McNabb is another winner. He led the Philadelphia Eagles to the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game five times, and to the Super Bowl in 2005. But Washington fans will have to get used to rooting for, instead of against, the former Eagles star.
I like Jason Campbell, the Redskins quarterback last season, and I hope he does well with the Oakland Raiders. But McNabb is probably better than Campbell.
The Redskins also added some much-needed power to the offensive line, which is the quarterback's main protection. First-round draft pick Trent Williams, as well as veterans Jammal Brown and Artis Hicks, should do a pretty good job of keeping the defense away from McNabb.
With all these changes, do the Redskins have a chance for a winning season -- and maybe even the playoffs? I don't think so, and here's why.
First, the Redskins would have to win five more games to Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
have a winning record. That's a big assignment for any team. Still, four teams -- the Cincinnati Bengals, San Diego Chargers, Green Bay Packers and Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints -- all improved by five or more wins last season. So maybe the Redskins will pull it off this year.
The second reason I don't think the Redskins will have a winning season is that they have a rough schedule. As they do every year, they have to play their always-tough NFC East division rivals, the Cowboys, Eagles and New York Giants, twice. Washington didn't win a game against any of those teams last season. In addition, the Redskins go up against such Super Bowl contenders as the Indianapolis Colts (14-2 last season), Minnesota Vikings (12-4) and Green Bay PackersDallas Cowboys jersey
(11-5).
Finally, the team doesn't have many solid substitutes in case of injuries, which always happen during a long, hard-hitting NFL season. That could hurt the Redskins' chances. If McNabb goes down (as he did in the preseason with an injured ankle), watch out: Rex Grossman, who was never a star during his six years with the Chicago Bears, would be the starting quarterback. Or if some of the new offensive linemen get hurt, the 34-year-old McNabb will have to run for his life.

2010 NFL Season Week 1 Preview: Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers

Cowboys jersey

The Atlanta Falcons will travel to Heinz Field to face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. The absence of Ben Roethlisberger from the Steelers starting line-up will not do any favors for Pittsburgh.
Michael Turner of the Falcons has proven himself to be nfl jersey
an elite fantasy running back. However, do not look for him to have a huge game. The Steelers allowed less than 90 yards per game on the ground last season and opponents only scored 7 rushing touchdowns all season long.
Pittsburgh’s pass defense didn’t fare as well last season, particularly in the fourth quarter. However, Troy Polamalu is healthy and Matt Ryan had a less than stellar preseason. Points are going to be at a premium for the Falcons.
Unfortunately for the Steelers, points may be at a premium for an offense led by Dennis Dixon too. Luckily for Dixon, the Atlanta Falcons were ranked 28th against the pass last year and gave up 25 touchdowns through the air.
Equally fortuitous for Pittsburgh is that Atlanta allowed 10 rushing touchdowns on the season and over 100 rushing yards per game. Maurkice Pouncey has taken over starting center duties which should help the Steelers’ efforts on the ground. Rashard Mendenhall rushed for Minnesota Vikings jersey
over 1,100 yards last season even without Pouncey’s upgrade along the offensive line.
There is no question that the Steelers defense will keep the score manageable. However, the game is going to be won or lost while Pittsburgh’s offensive unit is on the field. One has to believe that a Steelers team led by Ben Roethlisberger would find a way to win this game. Hopefully, Dennis Dixon can find similar success.
Sunday will be a tough test for Dixon. But even Indianapolis Colts jersey
without Roethlisberger, the Falcons are only favored by between 1 and 2.5 points depending on the casino.
Expect a low-scoring defensive battle. This type of game usually favors Pittsburgh. However, we’ll have to wait until Sunday afternoon to see if Dixon and the Steelers can pull it out.

2010 NFL Preview: AFC

Cowboys jersey

New England Patriots (10-6) – As long as Brady and Belichick are around, it’ll be difficult for any other team to hold an edge over the Patriots in the AFC East. The recently employed youth movement has made the defense better than the one that helped them reach the Super nfl throwback jerseys
Bowl just a few seasons ago, especially with regard to the linebackers and secondary. This is a very tight division with the exception of the cellar-dwelling Bills, but I think the Patriots have the talent and experience to win it once more.

New York Jets (9-7) –You’d think these Jets had a few rings on their fingers already, but only a playoff run made possible only by a few breaks late in their schedule has given them this heir. All that aside, it is clear that the Jets have the best team top to bottom in the AFC, and maybe in all of football, but for them to make it work, many new personalities, will have to mesh with their already in place balance of veterans and youth. In the end, the Jets at full strength are among the favorites to reach the Super Bowl.

Miami Dolphins (8-8) – After winning the division, the Dolphins set themselves back to 7-9 and out of the playoffs last season, but should certainly be in the mix this season. Chad Henne’s development is of primordial importance and should be smoother with the acquisition of the great Brandon Marshall. Usually, a group with this much talent is playoff-bound, but this year’s version of the AFC will have twelve teams competing for six playoff spots, which doesn’t bode well for Tony Sparano’s squad.

Buffalo Bills (3-13) – Things are going to get ugly in Buffalo this season. Though C.J. Spiller may turn out to be a stud down the road, they failed to address need in the draft, one of many critiques that can be had about the Bills. Just 2-10 against their AFC East foes Minnesota Vikings jersey
over the past two seasons is a hideous mark that might only get worse. Can anyone figure out why they hired Chan Gailey rather than someone even halfway decent? This edition of the Bills has a 2011 No. 1 overall draft pick written all over it.

AFC North (predicted order of finish and records)

Baltimore Ravens (11-5) – Though Baltimore has done little in big spots as of recent years, this Ravens squad rivals teams like Indy and New York as the most talented in the conference. Carried by their defense for years, the Ravens can actually flaunt a good offense this year, led by breakout star Ray Rice and a solid receiving core, which must pick up the mistake prone Joe Flacco under center. Though they did go 1-6 against teams that reached the playoffs last year, they might be among the elite in 2010.

Cincinnati Bengals (8-8) – It’s been nearly three decades since the Bengals have put together consecutive winning seasons, and by watching the end of last year, you wouldn’t think they had one at all, especially with a putrid playoff showing. This is a deep and talented group that Marvin Lewis leads, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that it has the potential to blow up in his face, especially with the is signing of Terrell Owens. They should compete for a Wild Card spot, but may wind up on the outside.

Pittsburgh Steelers (8-8) – How can anyone think this team will be better than average? Not having Roethlisberger is an obstacle that they can overcome, but you’re looking at essentially the same group that choked away a playoff spot with losses to Oakland, Kansas City, and Cleveland down the stretch last year. The North is no pushover, and it looks like the Steelers won’t be challenging for the top, but we’ve seen this team be dominant in years past, so they should stay in the mix for the duration of the year.

Cleveland Browns (4-12) – The Browns are way too short on talent to be any semblance of a factor in the AFC North, but I would say that the arrow is pointed in the right direction with the team being run by Holmgren. The quarterback situation just doesn’t leave a very good taste in my mouth, and this could be another team poised to go winless within the division. A bad Browns season would be another punch in the gut for a city that doesn’t need any more, but the forecast is gloom to be rather generous.

AFC South (predicted order of finish and records)

Indianapolis Colts (13-3) – The last time the Colts didn’t win 10+ games was 2001, and in a 2009 some predicted they would dip a bit, they held a lead at halftime of the Super Bowl. Winning this division and making hay in the playoffs is a certainty for Peyton’s bunch, as over the past decade, the Colts have become the closest entity to what is a sure thing in any sport. What makes them particularly scary is the fact their defense is growing up, something they’ve won without. They’re en route to Dallas. Bet on it.

Houston Texans (9-7) – The Texans are inching closer to postseason play every year, but getting over that hump has been a true challenge for the only American sports team never to make the playoffs. They’re really playing for a Wild Card since winning the division is truly out of the question, but the lethal duo of Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson make for a fun offense to watch. Houston should really be able to crack into the tournament this year, if not, expect heads to roll for this Texan organization.

Tennessee Titans (9-7) – Always loaded with young talent that few people outside the organization know, expect the Titans to be in the running for a playoff spot. A full season for Vince Young should allow Tennessee to garner more success, but it is highly unlikely that the great Chris Johnson will be able to replicate his 2009. To be honest, Jeff Fisher keeps them competitive, exactly why the Titans are never bad, and as we’ll see, Tennessee will be as steady enough to remain in the fight for the playoffs.

Jacksonville Jaguars (7-9) – The AFC South is easily the deepest division in football, and a team like Jacksonville, which might even finish under. 500 is by no means a bad one. They do however seem like a team not cut out to crack the AFC’s elite, but wouldn’t be a cellar dweller in a run of the mill quartet. Maurice Jones-Drew carries the brunt of the load on offense, and their defense actually got better this offseason. It’s just really a case of grouping and too much stiff competition for the Jags to contend.

AFC West (predicted order of finish and records)

San Diego Chargers (10-6) – Like the NFC West, no team should really win this division, but as they do perennially, the Chargers remain the best of the bunch. Philip Rivers has surely taken the next step into the elite, but is not surrounded by the loaded squads as he has been in years past. I won’t deny that their ten game winning streak to end last season wasn’t impressive, but as always, they came up small where it counts. They’ll win the division for the sixth time in seven years, but will fizz out in January.

Denver Broncos (6-10) – There really is much separating the Broncos, Chiefs, and Raiders, and after starting 6-0 last season; they lost eight of their last ten games. It seems like none of their young stars desire to play for this once proud franchise that has faded into oblivion and not made the playoffs since 2005. I don’t know if they want to admit that they should rebuild, especially with a young coach, but as long as they remain stubborn in their ways, the Broncos will experience the same, familiar result.

Kansas City Chiefs (5-11) – They have a chance to be improved, and are building a decent team under a new regime. They won’t be a factor in the West, and that won’t be helped by the fact that they have a rough September schedule-wise. It was a lousy 2009, for Matt Cassel and Co. that ended with a 4-12 mark for Kansas City, but building through the draft always work, so expect the Chiefs to take baby steps, but are well on their way to being a factor in the AFC as they were just a Dallas Cowboys jersey
few years ago.

Oakland Raiders (5-11) – Like Kansas City, they’re another team going in the right direction, especially by ridding themselves of the albatross that was JaMarcus Russell. Their defense is and has been pretty good for the past few years, and the organization actually did some competent drafting this year, but the offense is still average at best with a muddled running back situation and a lousy wide receiving core. It takes time to come back from where the Raiders have been, so more patience is needed.

AP Sources: Redskins, Titans talking Haynesworth

Indianapolis Colts jersey

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—The Washington Redskins and Tennessee Titans are in discussions about a trade of disgruntled defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth(notes), people with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press.
The people spoke to the AP on Tuesday on condition of football jerseys
anonymity because the talks are confidential.
Washington signed Haynesworth to a $100 million contract in 2009 as a free agent, and the tackle accepted a $21 million bonus in April. It’s been a nonstop battle of wills between Redskins coach Mike Shanahan and the ex-Tennessee star since then.
The Titans declined to comment, and the Redskins did not immediately respond to requests for comment. But Titans coach Jeff Fisher was asked about the team’s interest Tuesday night during his weekly radio show on WGFX-FM 104.5 The Zone, and he said Haynesworth is under contract with the Redskins.
“If they’re willing to look into the possibility of dealing him, of course we’ll listen to them. We listen to those types of things almost every day,” Fisher said.
“This just happens to be a big story because of the circumstances and the situation that arose with the offseason payment and then of course with all the drama associated with the offseason conditioning and the conditioning test and everything. Our focus right now is on the Raiders.”
Washington quarterback Donovan McNabb(notes) also Indianapolis Colts jersey
discussed Haynesworth on a radio show and said the Redskins can’t win without the tackle.
“He plays a major part on our defense, and everyone knows that,” McNabb told ESPN980. “It’s just unfortunate what’s been going on and how everything has transpired, but that’s the game of football, and I think he’ll handle it the right way.”
ESPN first reported the teams were discussing a possible Haynesworth deal.
Shanahan was hired in January, and Haynesworth did not participate in the team’s offseason program while lobbying for a trade because he didn’t want to play nose tackle in the new 3-4 defense. Shanahan gave Haynesworth a chance to leave, but the tackle stayed and accepted the bonus in his contract.
Haynesworth skipped a mandatory minicamp and was fined. In training camp, Shanahan required Haynesworth to pass a conditioning test before practicing, which Haynesworth didn’t do until the 10th day of camp. The tackle seemed to be accepting his role in the 3-4 defense by the third preseason game.
Then Shanahan made Haynesworth play almost the entire game Thursday in the preseason finale against Arizona when the regular starters had the night off. Haynesworth played 49 of 55 snaps and was on the field in the final minutes.
His status for Sunday night’s opener against Dallas has been in question with Shanahan saying only that he will play the best players ready to play.
The Titans have missed Haynesworth’s presence in the middle of their line, slumping to 31 sacks without him helping collapse offensive lines. He managed only four sacks with the Redskins himself, a big dip from his 8 1/2 sacks in 2008 with Tennessee.
And the Titans know him well, having drafted Haynesworth in the first round in 2002. They used the franchise tag to keep Haynesworth in 2008 to help keep him focused, and the deal they eventually offered in 2009 was nowhere near what he got from Washington in the first hours of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
free agency.
The former University of Tennessee lineman has 28 career sacks and six forced fumbles in his first eight NFL seasons.

Seattle re-signs Babineaux; waives Terrill

RENTON, Wash. (AP)—Veteran safety Jordan Babineaux(notes) has been re-signed by the Seattle Seahawks.
Babineaux rejoined the Seahawks on Tuesday, a nfl jerseys
day after he was waived by the team. To make room on the 53-man roster, the Seahawks waived defensive tackle Craig Terrill(notes).
Babineaux has spent his entire career with the Seahawks. He started all Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
16 games last season but was beaten out for a starting job in training camp by rookie Earl Thomas(notes).
Terrill had been with the Seahawks since being drafted in 2004 out of Purdue.

Report: Jaguars extend OG Nwaneri

The Jaguars and OG Uche Nwaneri(notes) have agreed on a five-year contract extension worth about $24 million, with $8-9 million guaranteed, according to FoxSports.com's Adam Caplan.
Nwaneri, 26, was a fifth-round pick of cheap nfl jerseys
the Jaguars in 2007 out of Minnesota Vikings jersey
Purdue. He has played in every game the past two seasons, starting all but four, and has been the team's most consistent offensive lineman.
Nwaneri enters the season as the starting left guard but has the ability to play both guard spots and center. His versatility will allow Jacksonville some flexibility on the interior of the O-line.

White undergoes surgery on torn right Achilles

Indianapolis Colts jersey

DENVER (AP)—Broncos running back LenDale White(notes) doesn’t have to go far for advice as he recovers from a surgically repaired torn right Achilles’ tendon that will sideline him for the season.
New teammate and fellow football jersey
tailback Andre Brown(notes) went through a similar procedure last August and was back in less than a year.
“It depends on how much work you put into it and how hard you work at it,” said Brown, who was awarded to the Broncos after being released by the New York Giants over the weekend. “I came back at full speed and I feel pretty fast.”
His best advice is actually quite simple—bear down on rehab.
“You come in here and you grind it out and plug it out and good things happen,” Brown said. “The hard work in your rehab will pay off.”
White’s uncle, Herman White, confirmed the surgery to The Associated Press on Tuesday, saying the operation “went as expected” and that his nephew now has “some work he needs to put in.”
“It’s going to be a long haul,” Herman White said.
LenDale White grew up in Denver and is trying to resurrect his career with the Broncos after a fallout in Tennessee and a brief stop in Seattle. He tore his Achilles’ tendon during Denver’s preseason finale at Minnesota last week.
The 25-year-old Southern Cal standout faces months of Indianapolis Colts jersey
arduous rehab as he tries to make a return to the field. Many tailbacks have struggled to come back from this type of tear, but Herman White said his nephew’s spirits and confidence “are real high.”
“He’s ready to do this,” Herman White said. “There are people that are speculating that he won’t be back, because of the severity and that very few have been able to come back successfully. He’s a young man and he’s strong. I’m very confident that he’s going to be back.”
Brown has yet to contact LenDale White, but will give him any pointers he needs as he goes through rehab.
A fourth-round pick out of North Carolina State in 2009, Brown looked solid at times in Giants camp this summer before being let go.
He’s recently been hobbled by turf toe.
“I’m going to be good. This one is OK,” Brown said.
The time it took Brown to return from his torn Achilles’ corresponds with the research that LenDale White’s family has been doing into torn Achilles’ tendons. Recovery is typically around a year.
“This is not something he can take lightly,” Herman White said. “But the healing process and returning back to form, it’s something he’s prepared for.”
LenDale White was brought into camp to bolster a banged-up backfield. But he sprained his ankle two days after arriving in Denver, missing a chunk of time.
He returned strong, rushing for 53 yards and two TDs in the preseason before tearing his Achilles’ tendon. White figured to be a force near the goal line this season for the Broncos, once he returned from his four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.
His uncle said he’s grateful for the chance at a fresh start in his hometown.
“It’s definitely a new chapter,” Herman White said. “It’s Dallas Cowboys jersey
a great opportunity for him. He’s real ecstatic.”
As for what awaits LenDale White, his uncle echoed what Brown already alluded to: Rehab, rehab and more rehab.
“But I’m sure the Broncos have great people over there,” Herman White said. “I’m sure they’ll get him where needs to go.”
